Cell Phones & Social Media.

Have you ever noticed how often people are on the cell phones or on a social media site during the day?  Have you ever noticed the amount of time that you spend on your cell phone or on social media during the day?  Whether I am walking around town, walking to school, driving my car, or sitting on the bus, people around me are always on cell phones and social media websites.

I can't help but ask myself what happened to normal conversations.  What happened to just walking and looking at your surroundings.  What happened to people watching and deep thinking instead of using your cell phone during any spare moment you have.  I think it’s sad that we are constantly on technological devices.  We are missing out on the opportunity to meet new people or share a smile.  I feel like technology runs our lives sometimes!
Over the last few weeks I have been working on spending my spare time in other places.  I’ve been able to write in my journal, read, and spend more time in conversations with my family and friends to say a few.  I do enjoy social media, but I know my time can be much more productive in other places.  I have learned to enjoy and appreciate the things around me even more since I have spent less time on my cell phone and social media.

  1. This is definitely something I need to be better at! I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I think I need to be better at communicating in other forms than social media. Thanks for sharing!

  2. The world is an increasingly different place. People don't communicate in the same way they used to. 100 years ago, if your friend traveled to England you would write him/her a letter. I'd imagine people spent a lot of time writing letters as opposed to actually communicating with people. Surely it's much more time efficient to send an email as opposed to writing a full-blown letter. Wouldn't that suggest you now have more time to talk with your family, friends, journals, etc.? Now don't misunderstand me, I totally agree with the concept that social media is a center for wasted time on meaningless things. What I am suggesting is that there is a line that defines effective and meaningful communication, and there is a line that defines ineffective and meaningless communication. I would argue that communication that is centered in the camp that defines effective and meaningful communication would actually increase the amount of time spent in the areas that Alyson suggested.

  3. Us having social media at our fingertips is definitely a big distraction. We always want to know what is happening in other lives, yet as you pointed out, we don't physically interact with people and ask them directly! However, I think people really do want to connect, we just have slid into a comfort zone and now are afraid of reaching out. We just need to get the courage to speak up and put away the phones and other distractions.

  4. I think this really applies to the holiday season when we're going to be around friends and family so much more. We shouldn't let our precious time go to waste by being on our phones and computers. We need to socialize and grow closer to those that we love. So I'm going to try really hard to keep my phone put away these next few weeks!
