Be YOUnique.

We all have different hair color, eye color, and skin color.  We are all made in different shapes and sizes and there are billions of options for clothing and hair styles.  We all have different experiences and background stories.  There are certain things that we each wish we could have or desperately want to achieve.  However, we need to remember that we are all different and that is okay.

Imagine putting everything you have into a project and feeling overwhelmed by how wonderful it turned out.  You are so proud of this treasure that you want to show it off to the world!  It is a one-of-a-kind and absolutely nothing else in the world could replace it.  You love it with all of your heart and could not imagine changing one thing about it, because you know that you made it absolutely perfect.  Now ask yourself this: how would you feel if someone criticized this work of yours?  How would you feel if they put it down, and told you that it was not as great as you believed it was.  When they criticize your work, in a way they are criticizing you.

When God created you, he created you perfectly.  You are a one-of-a-kind that cannot be replaced by anything else.  God loves you and cannot imagine changing one thing about you because he knows that you are perfect just the way that you are.  Now imagine how he feels when you criticize yourself for an imperfection that you see.  When you put yourself down, ultimately you are putting God down as well.

This scenario helps me to realize that we are all unique.  We are all different, and that is perfectly okay!  In God’s eyes, we are all exactly how he intended us to be.  What more do we need?  He knows of our quirks and the little imperfections that we see.  He knows that we make mistakes and he created a plan to help us with that.

Now, I am going to try to remember this and implement it in my life every day.  Every time I feel insecure about something, I am going to remind myself that I am the way I was always intended to be.  I am going to try to remind others that they are perfect just the way that they are as well.  I am a firm believer that small changes in thought processes can go a long way.  I hope that by helping others to see the good in themselves I can make a positive change in the world.

  1. This is an awesome insight Aly. I wish more people would think like this. The world is so focused on pointing out the flaws in people that its an oddity when someone suggests we uplift each other. That is just plain sad. We should already be thinking that way! Its true, people are all different, but they are that way because its the way God wants us to be. I think your goal of being more positive toward yourself and others is awesome and I hope you get more people to follow your example.

  2. Aly I really appreciate that insight. We live in a world that is filled with so much intolerance and criticism that it undermines our view of each other as children of God at times. God appreciates the unique things about us that make us who we are. I think that so often we are so busy thinking that we are right or our lifestyle is the correct one that we pause and don't see and love in the same way that God does. So I think that is an awesome insight.

  3. I have a tendency to compare myself to others a lot and I have a tendency to judge other people at times. I try not to put them down in any way because like you said when you put them down, in a way, you are putting God down. Everyone is the way they are for a reason and we shouldn't try and change that. We shouldn't criticize someone just because they act or look different than we do. God is perfect and he created us just the way we were meant to be. Thank you for that great post. It really helped open my eyes.

  4. I feel that it is impossible for humans to go through life without comparing themselves to someone else. It is as if we don't realize who we truly are: children of God. God created us just how he wanted us to be. He created us with weakness so that we may grow. He created us with flaws so that we may be humble. All too often we forget that the Atonement of Jesus Christ makes up for our weakness. I often compare myself to other people but I then think that God needs be to be me and that is why he gave me the attributes that he did. I may not be able to change the world like Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, or Michael Jackson, but I can change the world in the way that God wants ME to. All we need to be is ourselves.
